You may have noticed that http://www.finkproject.org is unavailable. The hosting provider at xs4all, where the machine is located, has been notified. We regret the inconvenience.
In addition to web services, this also affects distribution of updated package descriptions via the rsync mirrors. The following two workarounds are available:
- Use
fink selfupdate-cvsto switch to CVS updating, since CVS service is not affected. - Use a different rsync mirror. The following mirrors update directly from CVS and are not affected by the outage:
rsync://ber.de.eu.finkmirrors.net/finkinfo/
rsync://hnd.jp.asi.finkmirrors.net/finkinfo/
The easiest option to change this is to edit/sw/etc/fink.confas a super user (e.g. by usingsudo nano /sw/etc/fink.conf) and change theMirror-rsyncline directly.
The disruption also affects the mirroring of package sources. The following two workarounds are suggested:
- Use
fink configure --mirrorand select option 2 at the first prompt, then go through and just hit return to leave everything else unchanged. This will have fink try to download from the original source first. - Use a different master mirror. The following mirrors are not affected by the outage:
http://distfiles.ber.de.eu.finkmirrors.net/
http://distfiles.hnd.jp.asi.finkmirrors.net/
The easiest option to change this is to edit/sw/etc/fink.confas a super user (e.g. by usingsudo nano /sw/etc/fink.conf) and change theMirror-masterline directly.

I’m trying to install Fink for the first time – just got a new job and a new Mac. It looks like Fink is the best way to install things like BioPerl. I found Fink on sourceforge and downloaded it, and was getting ready to install when I found that I should be using fink-full-Xcode instead? Any idea where I can download that particular tarball so I can at least get started? It’s now October 9th and it appears the Fink project website is still down
Yeah. Unfortunately I haven’t heard anything new about it.
I have no idea what “fink-full-Xcode” is. We used to put out a “fink-full-”, but we haven’t made one of those since 10.5 came out.
Assuming you have downloaded the source for fink-0.34.4, do the following:
0) Have at least the Command Line Tools for Xcode installed. We recommend Xcode 4.5.1.
1) Unpack the source, e.g. via running in a terminal window:
tar -xf $HOME/Downloads/fink-0.34.4.tar.gz
2) Switch to the base directory of the source:
cd $HOME/Downloads/fink-0.34.4
3) Start the configuration by running
./bootstrap
In general I’ve found that the default options when running the bootstrap script have served my needs.
4) Assuming successful completion of the script, run
/sw/bin/pathsetup.sh
to ensure that Fink’s customized environment gets loaded when you open a terminal session.
5) Start a new terminal session to load that environment, and run either
fink selfupdate-rsync
or
fink selfupdate-cvs
to download package descriptions.
I recommend emailing the Fink Beginners mailing list
fink-beginners@lists.sourceforge.net
or using the Fink IRC channel, which is #fink on freenode.irc.net, if you have more questions, since right now I’m the only one monitoring this blog, and I can’t guarantee availability.
Unfortunately, it looks like bioperl isn’t available yet on 10.8, due fundamentally to the Tk perl module not working there.
Thank you so very much for the quick answer! Especially the part about bioperl, since that’s my more urgent need and I was only loading up Fink to install that.
I’ll install bioperl from source instead, and hope that the finproject.org page comes back soon.
Thank you again!
Still no news from the xs4all?
Not that I’ve heard–at least not to the Fink Core Team’s mailing lists. I’m traveling, though, so I haven’t been on the #fink IRC channel and there might have been additional information discussed there.
Can we get an update on when this site will be back up?? As of 10/18, it has been down for over two weeks!
Thanks in advance,
I wish I had an update, but I don’t have any new information.
Additional information: mirroring of package source information is also affected. I’ve updated the main post accordingly.
This is the kind of outage that can kill a project such as Fink. Maybe the next Fink should have some kind of built-in method of using a mirror when the main host goes down.
That’s going to take more than an update to fink.
Failures to download sources from the Master mirrors _are_ currently handled, since users can pick an original source or go through the Master mirror list until they find a working one–though this might involve going outside of the user’s continent.
Rsync failures are much harder to detect, since there’s currently no status indication of “failed to connect” in what resides on the rsync servers. Without some kind of hook, there’s nothing for fink to look for.
What _really_ needs to happen is that all of the mirror sites need to get their information _directly_ from our repository on sourceforge.net. Unfortunately, the mirrors are run independently from the Fink project, and we can only suggest that they do things differently.
After some discussions in the #fink channel, it seems like we could in principle add a query on all of the rsync mirrors and inform the user if their selected mirror is lagging without huge changes to the code.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t apply to the server. We’re not exactly inundated by offers of free hosting, so right now there’s not an option for a fallback provider for the services we need.
Are there no url to get contents of http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/porting/porting.ja.html ?
It was good docs for me.
Right now Sourceforge’s CVS is down, but when it comes back online you will be able to view it online through the CVS viewer on Sourceforge. I’ll post a link when that becomes available again.
Pingback: Sourceforge CVS outage | Finkers: a blog about Fink
The CVS viewer is back up. Navigating to:
http://fink.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/fink/web
will at least allow some access to our documentation pages–links that go to other pages within finkproject.org don’t work.
Thank you for the answer.
I’m glad the docs is not lost.
How much bandwidth and storage does the site need to get back online?
Send me back and email, I may have some hosting options to get a site back online.
I’m honestly not sure. If you could drop a note to fink-core@lists.sourceforge.net (no need to subscribe unless you want to) hopefully someone there will have that information.
We appear to be back up now. Thanks for your patience, everybody.
Glad to see fink back up!
No, it’s down again
Urgh. I’ve started a new post to track _this_ one.

We use XenLayer.com for our hosting needs for over 2 years now and have been very happy with the uptime, service and features. Not only is the network awesome, they also have auto-installers for a lot of software, and the support is always willing to help out with whatever we need. They also do WordPress migrations from server to server.
Our control board permits for easy disapproval. you can conjointly brand your own name servers, control board URL and mail / FTP details creating our reseller account appear as your own dedicated hosting platform to your clients.
